ABOUT THE WORK
This series of drawings by artist Aisling O’Beirn is called Light Pollution (Around the Waterworks a case Study) are made in response to the fact that the night sky is not visible from North Belfast due to light pollution caused by light randomly spilling out unnecessarily into the night sky from anywhere and everywhere. The titles of the work allude to the locations where they were drawn in and around the Waterworks Park in the north side of the city. Light pollution not only haemorrhages energy; it also obscures our view of our place in the galaxy. Dark Sky Meter Reading Waterworks Park refers to the grayish-white hue of the north Belfast sky and its score of 8/9, which indicates a city/inner city sky, on the Bortle Scale, a nine-level numeric scale that measures the night sky's brightness of a particular location and quantifies the astronomical observability of celestial objects and the interference caused by light pollution.
